JOHN W. BARRY "Of the Barry Children, I knew John, 'Jack' the best. Jack was an army man for 25 years, having enlisted, October 12, 1903 and was discharged as a first class sergeant, Co. I, Seventh Infantry on September 4, 1928. I do not know the reason that Jack came to Chelsea, Michigan, however, both of us were members of the Herbert J. McKune, Post #31, The American Legion, Chelsea, Michigan that no doubt brought us closer together. We spent many happy hours together talking about our service in France. Some time about the last of 1935 or early 1936, Nina Greening, also a cousin, and Jack's brother, James (Jim) contacted me and told that Jack was ill. Nina and Jim were in Florida so Jack was placed in a small local hospital which was located on Van Buren street, there he was well cared for but did not respond to the medical care that was given him, he died there, March 14, 1936. I took care of most of the details for his funeral, the services were held at St. Patrick's church in Northfield township, with burial in the church cemetery. Herbert J. McKune, Post #31 was in charge of the burial service. Jack, as far as I know, was never married." [S27]
