Obituary notes for John Walter Bishop

A memorial gathering will be held July 9 for John W. Bishop of Eugene, who died July 3 of congestive heart failure. He was 81.
Bishop was born Feb. 21, 1921 in Owosso, Mich., to Firmin and Ruth Coles Bishop. He married Frances Sullivan in Buffalo, N.Y., on Nov. 29, 1947.
He lived in Buffalo and in Germany for two years before settling in this area 53 years ago.
He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan. He graduated from the medical school of the University of Michigan in 1946 and did his residency in opthalmology in Buffalo from 1947 to '50.
He served in the Army from 1953 to '55.
He was employed as an ophthalmologist and practicing physician in Eugene from 1951 to '89. He was a member of the Lane County Medical Society.
His interests included astronomy, and he was a member of the Eugene Astronomical Society. He also belonged to the Eugene Country Club.
He enjoyed golf and playing bridge.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, John Jr. of Plano, Texas, Jim of Girdwood, Alaska, and Michael of Eugene; two daughters, Susan Lutz of Anchorage and Lynda Acker Bishop of Port Angeles, Wash.; two brothers, Firmin of Duxbury, Mass., and William of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Zoanne Flickinger of Minot, N.D.; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Friday's gathering will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Eugene Country Club. Poole-Larsen Funeral Home in Eugene [sic - Musgrove Family Mortuary] is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Eugene Astronomical Society or to KidSports.
