Entered into rest on December 11, 2005 at St. Joseph Hospice, Dr. Daniel B. Sullivan, 81, beloved husband, for 58 years, of Mrs. Anne Kelly Sullivan of Augusta.
Dr. Sullivan was born in Gilbert, MN and grew up in Flint, Michigan where he was captain and quarterback at Flint Central High School. He attended Central Michigan College on a football scholarship until joining the U.S. Army during WWII. Dr. Sullivan graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in 1949 and volunteered to serve in the Korean War as a Battalion Aid Surgeon with the 24th Infantry Division where he received the Combat Medic Badge. He did his surgical oncology training at Memorial Sloan- Kettering Hospital in New York City. Dr. Sullivan was a member of the Moretz Society, AOA Medical Honor Society, Uptown Kiwanis Club, St. Mary On-The-Hill Catholic Church, Richmond County Medical Society, the Society of Head and Neck Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, American Medical Association, Medical Association of Georgia, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the Southern Medical Society and Phi Rho Sigma Medical Fraternity. In 1972, he was appointed by then Gov. Jimmy Carter to serve on the Board of Human Resources. He served as chief of Surgery at University Hospital for 17 consecutive years. Dr. Sullivan founded and coached eight Pee Wee baseball teams in association with the Richmond County Recreation Dept. and played catcher for numerous baseball teams including the U.S. Army and the Augusta City League. Julian Smith Casino ball field was named in his honor. Dr. Sullivan was also instrumental in starting St. Joseph Hospice, the Georgia Radiation Therapy Center and the University Hospital Cancer Clinic. He was an associate clinical professor of surgery at MCG and a consultant on the Tumor Board at Dwight David Eisenhower Medical Center at Fort Gordon, GA. The University Hospital Surgical Residency Program was named in his honor and The Tumor Conference was named The Daniel B. Sullivan Conference Center.
Additional survivors include his two daughters, Patricia Sullivan Briscoe and her husband, Jack of Monroe, GA., Kathleen Sullivan Elms and her husband, Jay of Conway, SC; his son, Daniel Barber Sullivan and his wife, Erin of Durham, NC; his sister, Frances Sullivan Bishop of Eugene, OR, and 12grandchildren, Kerry Elms, Shannon Elms, Christopher Elms, Shawn Elms, Daniel Elms, Brian Sause, Abigail Sause, Christopher Sause, Michael Sause, Davis Briscoe, Kelly Briscoe and Daniel Jackson Briscoe.
A funeral mass will be held today, Tuesday, December 13, 2005, 12 o'clock noon, at St. Mary On-The-Hill Catholic Church with Rev. Martino Ba Thong Nguyen celebrant. Pallbearers will be Dr. Harold Engler, Dr. Henry Bailey, Dr. Vendi Hooks, Dr. Walter Voyles, Dr. Blakely Chandler, Dr. Charles Veazey, Dr. Philip Veazey and Dr. Michael Shlaer. Interment will follow at Westover Memorial Park with Military Honors.

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest on her 84th birthday, Friday, November 20, 2009 at her residence, Georgia Anne Kelly Sullivan, wife of the late Dr. Daniel B. Sullivan. Mrs. Sullivan was a life long resident of Augusta. She was a lifelong member of Greene Street Presbyterian Church, where she received The Women of the Church Lifetime Achievement Award. Mrs. Sullivan graduated from Tubman High School, Augusta Junior College, and the University of Georgia with a BA in Psychology. She taught elementary school in Battle Creek, MI and Davidson Elementary in Augusta. She was a member of the Richmond County Medical Auxiliary and The Richmond County Historical Society. Mrs. Sullivan was a life long advocate for children and animals and was proud of being responsible for the first four-way stop intersection at Johns and Cumming Roads. Family members include her daughters: Kathleen Sullivan Elms and husband Jay of Conway, SC ; Patricia Sullivan Briscoe and husband Jack of Monroe, GA son: Daniel Barber Sullivan and wife Erin of Durham, NC ; grandchildren: Kerry Elms, Shannon Elms, Christopher Elms, Shawn Elms, Daniel Elms, Brian Sause, Abigail Sause, Christopher Sause, Michael Sause, Davis Briscoe, Kelly Briscoe and Daniel Jackson Briscoe; brother: George L. Kelly of Atlanta, GA; and nephew: Nathan DeVaughn his wife Linda and son Conor. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 27, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son with Rev.
